Although rules will not change, some clarifications may be made and
announced up to and on the day of the Science Olympiad Tournament. Please watch
www.soinc.org for corrections and
clarifications. Significant changes regarding procedures or rules should be
approved in writing at the State level for Regional Tournaments and at the
National level for State Tournaments. All changes must be sent to all coaches in
writing or posted on official websites.

Each team may enter up to fifteen (15) students from the same school. If
permitted by the State Director, schools may field multiple teams.
Each team must have a separate coach and a separate paid membership.

Teams may enter as many or as few events as they wish. A team may enter no
more than one team per event. If a second individual or team from the
same team is entered, the second score will be disqualified regardless
of how they placed. Except for such events as Write- It Do-It or
Pentathlon (when they are in), teams are not required to provide the
maximum number of participants listed when the rule says: “A Team Of Up
To”. Teams will, however, be at a disadvantage if they choose this
option for any event.

All teams must register for Regional, State and National Tournaments.
Some Directors require teams to register prior to or on the day of the
tournament. Most request the name of the coach and student
name/address/grade level. Some may ask which events teams will compete
in. It is not necessary, however, to name the students who will compete
in each event as these names can be changed and listed up to the day of
the event. The time of each of the events is noted on the Schedule of
Events. Please note that those events scheduled from 9:30-10:30, for
example, begin promptly at 9:30. Students must get to the proper
location (room, arena or field) and be on time to compete in a specific
contest. Tournament Directors are encouraged to list some events as
walk-in events, to provide teams some flexibility, rather than specify
the time schedule for each event. If students need accommodations,
coaches need to plan for them and request tournament director approval
in writing prior to the tournament.

Athletic-style medals will be given for each event. In addition,
championship trophies will be awarded to the Division B and C school
teams compiling the best performances during the Science Olympiad. At
the national finals, points will be awarded for all places (1st
place gets 1 point, etc.). So, teams that have the best performances
will have the lowest total scores and will be declared the winners.
State and regional directors are encouraged to follow the same scoring
format, but may choose other variations as long as all team are notified
in writing.
