Science Olympiad Alumni in Space

Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger, a former Science Olympiad participant and coach from Colorado, launched into space aboard the shuttle Discovery on April 5th from Cape Canaveral, Florida.  She was selected as a Mission Specialist by NASA in 2004 and completed her Astronaut Candidate Training in 2006. Dottie's former teacher and coach at Ft. Collins High School, Jack Lundt, attended the launch with his wife to show support for his award-winning student.

Science Olympiad is a Rock Star of Science

The new Rock Stars of Science (ROCK SOS) program was launched in GQ magazine this fall and recognizes the amazing talents of scientists and researchers in the USA. Musicians like Will I. Am of the Black Eyed Peas, Josh Groban, Sheryl Crow, Seal and Joe Perry of Aerosmith lent their star power to the campaign and hope to raise awareness about science careers while also raising funds for health research via the Geoffrey Beene Foundation.  We nominated Dr.

American Egg Board Recognizes Incredible Science Olympiad Students

Science Olympiad has partnered with the American Egg Board to reward the incredible achievements of Science Olympiad students across the US in 2009.  The AEB provided $1,000 college scholarships to the gold medal winners of our two egg-themed events, Scrambler for Division B (won by Solon Middle School) and Egg-O-Naut for Division C (North Carolina School of Science and Math), at the 2009 Science Olympiad National Tournament at Augusta State University on May 16.

Science in the City 2008

On October 18, 2008, Science Olympiad volunteers engaged more than 5,000 Chicago students and families with the Gummi Bear Long Jump, a fun physics-based hands-on activity.  Partnering with World Sports Chicago, the Chicago Public Schools and the City of Chicago, Science Olympiad once again created a public outreach science challenge which was inexpensive, replicable and informative.  Each competitor received an eight-page info packet and a catapult model kit.
