Nothing in the rules establishes that the width equals the chord length. The colored panel must completely go from the front spar to the rear spar, ie the chord. Chord does not refer to the widest point of the wing, just the distance from the front spar to the back. The colored panel just spans the width between two wing ribs as well as the chord length to earn the 10% bonus in Wright Stuff.
